My Super Ex-Girlfriend $9.84 A regular guy finds out just how hard breaking up can truly be when attempting to call it quits with a clingy female crime fighter who doesn’t want to let love die in director Ivan Reitman’s super-powered romantic comedy. Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) was looking for love when he first met pretty brunette Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman), and at the time it seemed as if he may had finally actually found it. Jenny isn’t just your typical girl, though, because despite her outwardly normal appearance she is actually a powerful superhero dedicated to ridding the streets of crime. Her outward strength betrays a deep-rooted insecurity, too, and when Jenny begins to become a bit too possessive for Matt’s laid-back taste, the troubled boyfriend does his best to end the relationship amicably. They say that breaking up isn’t easy to do, however, and when your girlfriend is a superhero, that sentiment holds twice the truth as it does under any normal circumstances. Matt is determined to get on with his life, though, and as his budding romance with beautiful co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris) begins to get serious, jealous Jenny scornfully slips into G-Girl mode to prove that hell hath no fury like a woman superhero scorned. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Featured in the supporting cast are William Orr, the son-in-law of studio head Jack Warner (and later a TV producer) and former silent screen ingenue Mabel Taliaferro. Win a Date With Tad Hamilton $6.38 The soundtrack to the happy-go-lucky teen romantic comedy Win a Date With Tad Hamilton has an appealingly lighthearted mix of dance, rock, and pop that includes Wheat’s “Some Days,” the Thorns’ cover of the Jayhawks’ alt-country classic “Blue,” and Liz Phair’s “Why Can’t I?” (surely one of the most-featured songs on romantic comedy soundtracks in 2003 and 2004). The overall feel of the collection is down-to-earth, with a strong emphasis on singer/songwriter tracks like Kyle Riabko’s “Waiting,” Jason Wade’s “Days Go By,” and John Mayer’s “Back to You.” Indeed, the soundtrack often sounds like it was aimed at an older audience than the film was (or, at least, it’s giving teenagers more credit than most soundtracks do) by including so many quiet, largely acoustic songs such as Alice Peacock’s “Leading With My Heart,” and Bonnie McKee’s “Somebody.” The songs that actually do sound like they belong on a typical teen movie soundtrack, like Wilshire’s “Something Special,” Soul Kid #1′s “More Bounce in California,” and Bleu’s “I Won’t Go to Hollywood” almost seem out of place compared to the more restrained feel of the other tracks. However, this slight schizophrenia doesn’t detract much from Win a Date With Tad Hamilton’s easygoing feel. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi |

You Can’t Win $8.47 You Can’t Win is a slow drive through the kind of America that feels as wrung out and worn through as a pair of old sneakers. It’s the kind of terrain traversed by other introspective, rustic, youngish men like Jeff Tweedy, Joe Purdy, and (to an extent) Will Oldham — the kind of place you go if you’re looking for empty stretches of pavement and hulking, rusted-out factories moldering in the tall grass. Dolorean’s lead singer and songwriter, Al James, is interested in stories about men on the outskirts; You Can’t Win, to put it in the words of writer James Salter, concerns itself with “a breed of aimless wanderers” who “have an infuriating power, that of condemned men. They can talk to anybody; they can speak the truth.” James is interested in giving voice to this truth, and it sure does yield some sad songs. While James plods over some clichéd subjects on this album (women and booze chief among them), he at least has a knack for story. “Beachcomber Blues” and “My Still Life” tread the usual territory of busted hearts and broken dreams, but James manages to flesh out these old ideas in some surprising ways; the beachcomber becomes a symbol for the directionless wanderer, and the arid Californian landscape is riddled with images of an ex-lover. Granted, there’s a lot of drowsy, dull-hearted shambling going on here, and it’s a little depressing to come up against a wall of relentless melancholy such as this. But even if this trip is a tad on the soporific side, Dolorean still manages to travel through some beautiful country. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi Performers: Peter Broderick – Mandolin, Banjo; Al James – Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Ben Nugent – Vocals (Background), Percussion, Drums, Vocals; Emil Amos – Guitar (Electric), Vocals; Jack Gibson – Vocals; James Adair – Guitar (Bass); Jay Clarke – Vibraphone, Organ, Piano (Electric), Piano; Jonathan Drews – Vocals; Laura Gib |

All My Relations $23.84 Set against the stark but seductive landscape of the American Southwest, the stories in All My Relations explore the inner landscape of mind and heart, where charting the simplest course is subject to a complex constellation of relationships. In the title story of the collection, a Pima Indian hires on with a rancher in an attempt to quit drinking and to win back the wife and son who have left him. His efforts to master land and horses and to bake the perfect cake mirror his efforts to subdue his own demons and to embrace a peaceful domesticity. In "The Big Bang and the Good House", Tony, a former drug dealer, pits his urge toward chaos against the orderly pleasures of marriage, finally yielding to the solidity and spaciousness of domestic love: "I feel myself gathering weight, density. Cautiously, I allow myself to inhabit this Good House, which surprisingly fits like my own body". Julia, the aging protagonist of "Simplifying", risks her fragile health in a love affair; her generosity of spirit toward her lover is matched in inverse proportion by the frugality with which her lover doles out his affections. In "The March of the Toys", a young woman flees Delaware, her chronically ill father, and her grieving mother, only to find that she’s traded the neediness of her family for the harrowing disturbances of her lovers. She muses, "I couldn’t affect anyone’s life. I could only attend it".In "Hualapai Dread", an investment broker’s infatuation with an enigmatic Hualapai Indian woman, as elusive as she is beautiful, brings out his most predatory instincts and unmasks her own deceit. Acting on similar but more destructive impulses toward the object of his sexual obsession, a character in another story takes his soon-to-be ex-wife on a bizarre "honeymoon for divorce". The close-knit family of "Builders" breaks under the strain of constructing their dream house with their |
