“It seems that everyone who has ever been part of a church has suffered a “church hurt.” The pastor had an affair or the congregation fought over money or the leaders were disguising gossip as “prayer.” Stephen Mansfield has been there. Though he is now a “New York Times” best-selling author, he was a pastor for over 20 years, and he loved it-until he learned how much a church can hurt. Yet he also learned how to dig out of that hurt, break through the bitterness and anger, stop making excuses, and get back to where he ought to be with God and his people. If you’re ready to take the tough path to healing, Mansfield will walk you through it with brotherly love, showing you how you can be better than ever on the other side of this mess … if you’re willing to “ReChurch.”"

Get to Know Your Rabbit

Get to Know Your Rabbit

$13.76

Rated: RSynopsis: Unavailable in any home-video format for years, Get to Know Your Rabbit is ripe for rediscovery as one of Brian De Palma’s earliest and most entertaining films. Filmed in 1970 after De Palma’s previous indie-films Greetings (1968) and Hi Mom! (1970), then held in limbo and only barely released in 1972, this countercultural comedy is fueled by the same irreverent, anti-establishment attitude that made Easy Rider so phenomenally popular. It’s as freshly relevant as ever, with the same quality of whimsical absurdity that you’ll find in similar comedies of the time like Norman Lear’s Cold Turkey (1971), another memorable gem that’s due for rediscovery. Before finding his niche in Hitchcockian thrillers, De Palma was aiming for something more comedically subversive (as a result, this film suffered from studio tinkering to make it more commercially appealing), but he still managed to capture just the right combination of satire and slapstick in telling the tale of Donald Beeman (a perfect role for Tommy Smothers), a corporate drone who quits his well-paying job and reinvents himself as a tap-dancing magician with the help of an aging illusionist played (in a sloshed parody of himself) by Orson Welles. As ridiculous as it seems, Beeman’s new life suits him just fine while his former boss (hilariously played by TV’s Addams Family star John Astin) recovers from a precipitous downfall and turns tap-dancing magic acts into a self-help cottage industry! With a bevy of familiar costars including character actor Allen Garfield and a young, cheerful Katharine Ross (then on the verge of stardom, and appropriately billed as “A Really Terrific Looking Girl”), Get to Know Your Rabbit meanders amiably on its merry way, scoring as many comedic misses as hits as Beeman finds the life he’s looking for, but it’s got a timeless charm that anyone can relate to… even De Palma’s latter-day fans. –Jeff Shannon Product DescriptionTom Smothers drops out of the rat race to be a magician in this offbeat comedy directed by Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables). The Way It Is

The Way It Is

$7.97

There isn’t a second of Bruce Hornsby & the Range’s The Way It Is that suggests it’s a debut album. On the contrary, the record sounds like the culmination of a band’s efforts over many years. The group has a distinct sound of its own, often led by Hornsby’s bright piano chords and elastic tenor, with cohesive and evocative arrangements; there is new age music here, as well as jazz and country, and the mixture is presented naturally by musicians who seem to have been playing with each other for some time. Similarly, the songwriting has its own flavor. Hornsby wrote seven of the nine songs with his brother John Hornsby, and they create their own world, a working-class environment of longing and loneliness set against the background of the Virginia Tidewater area. (The album cover displays a sepia-toned photograph of the band set over another photograph of the long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.) The lyrics are lightly poetic and restrained, for the most part. The exception is the title song (written by Bruce Hornsby alone), a brave if somewhat clumsily written attack on the heartless right-wing politics of the mid-’80s, as the U.S. suffered through a second Reagan administration determined to roll back civil rights gains. The boldness of the statement and the lovely piano theme more than compensate for the awkward writing, however, making the song one of the album’s most memorable. And that’s saying a lot when the competition includes the engaging “Mandolin Rain” and the appealingly romantic “Every Little Kiss” (Hornsby’s other sole writing credit). Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the music is so accomplished. Hornsby was no teenage neophyte when he made it, having kicked around the music business and gotten into his thirties, and the band includes such veterans as David Mansfield, who may be remembered as a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder troupe and the Alpha Band, as well as being a film composer. Sometimes a debut album just happens to be the first music most people get to hear by a mature talent, and that’s the case here on the debut album of the year. (Bruce Hornsby & the Range went on to win the 1986 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.) ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Bruce Hornsby – Dulcimer (Hammer), Accordion, Dulcimer, Keyboards, Vocals, Synthesizer, Piano; Huey Lewis – Harmonica, Vocals; David Mansfield – Mandolin, Guitar, Violin; George Marinelli – Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals, Guitar (Electric); Joe Puerta – Vocals, Bass; John Gilutin – Synthesizer

The Bloodhound Gang entry into Universal’s physical/digital hybrid Playlist Your Way series represents the first “best-of” collection from the Prussia, PA-bred post-grunge/stoner punk/alternative rock outfit. The band did a dutiful job in the late ’90s and early 2000s picking up the collegiate, innuendo-driven bathroom humor that the Beastie Boys had abandoned, scoring a sizable hit in 2000 with the winningly sophomoric single “Bad Touch” from the winningly sophomorically titled LP Hooray for Boobies. Playlist Your Way includes “Touch,” along with 13 other naughty gems like “A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When the Stripper Is Crying,” “I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks,” “Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny,” and the 1996 MTV hit “Fire Water Burn.” ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

A regular guy finds out just how hard breaking up can truly be when attempting to call it quits with a clingy female crime fighter who doesn’t want to let love die in director Ivan Reitman’s super-powered romantic comedy. Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) was looking for love when he first met pretty brunette Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman), and at the time it seemed as if he may had finally actually found it. Jenny isn’t just your typical girl, though, because despite her outwardly normal appearance she is actually a powerful superhero dedicated to ridding the streets of crime. Her outward strength betrays a deep-rooted insecurity, too, and when Jenny begins to become a bit too possessive for Matt’s laid-back taste, the troubled boyfriend does his best to end the relationship amicably. They say that breaking up isn’t easy to do, however, and when your girlfriend is a superhero, that sentiment holds twice the truth as it does under any normal circumstances. Matt is determined to get on with his life, though, and as his budding romance with beautiful co-worker Hannah (Anna Faris) begins to get serious, jealous Jenny scornfully slips into G-Girl mode to prove that hell hath no fury like a woman superhero scorned. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Normally, when a band decides to scale back production and embellishment on a record, it’s really no big deal. Many bands decide to drop the overdubs, or reduce the keyboards, or only work with a live horn section, for example. But when your band consists of two people, one playing baritone guitar and singing while the other drums and sings, “scaling back” seems like an impossibility. On the first Evens release, Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina had scaled back the angularity and electric dominance of their prior bands (Fugazi and Warmers, respectively) and chose to keep the music subtle, rooted in atmospherics. Adding to the stripped down lineup, Farina and MacKaye added piano and mood through post-production to give the album a rather warm, close feel. Although at times some of the tones could be jarring or the rhythms jagged, moods and atmosphere would swirl in and out, giving a slightly less than organic feel, leaving the listener safe in the opinion that a lot of the record could not be re-created on-stage in such detail. For Get Evens, their second full-length, the Evens must have agreed, and embarked on a recording process that was much more immediate, eschewing piano and overdubs, recording the songs with a more “live” sound, culminating in a record that is rough, angular, and wholly organic. But that is only half the picture. Both Farina and MacKaye spent a great deal of time in their previous bands dealing in what can only be called more abstract lyrical ideas. Sure, there is no mistaking the meanings behind Fugazi’s “Great Cop,” or “Give Me the Cure,” but much of that band’s conceptual fare was left up the ear and mind of the listener. With the Evens, MacKaye and Farina have obviously decided to leave that mindset behind, making pointed protest and criticism without flinching. “Everybody Knows,” with its scathing indictment of the real purpose of politicians and George W. Bush, pulls no punches. There’s no doubt as to what “you fabricated your way in here and everybody knows…you are a liar” means, or whom it’s meant for. Being from D.C., and living in these times, it’s no great surprise that the targets of MacKaye and Farina are the elected officials currently residing on Pennsylvania Ave. and others inhabiting federal offices. One only needs to take one listen to “Dinner with the President” to get the idea. But the easy political targets aren’t the only ones examined on this disc. The overreaching of government resultant from cashing in on fear and paranoia in the years since 9/11 get a fantastic (and arguably best so far in terms of songs on the matter) reading on “All You Find You Keep.” The emptiness of plastic culture (“Cache Is Empty”), consumerism (“Eventually”) and — most important to the overall theme of the record — freedom (“Get Even”) are examinations that gain so much from the decision to keep things as raw and real as possible. The Evens’ first disc was pointed and protesting, to be sure, but here, on Get Evens, the raw feel

Before he finally had his first big hit in the mid-’60s with “Hold What You’ve Got,” Joe Tex had recorded for a good decade, the singles he issued during that time largely remaining known only to committed collectors. As obscure as the songs he recorded for Dial between 1961 and 1964 (all now available on the CD compilation First on the Dial) are, the material he did prior to 1961 is yet more seldom heard. Much of it’s on Get Way Back: The 1950s Recordings, which collects 27 tracks he recorded between 1955 and 1960 for the King and Ace labels, none of which were hits. It says something for both Tex’s talent and perseverance that he was able to issue so much material without making a commercial impact, but it also says something about the derivative nature of that material. While Joe was already an adept singer at this early stage, the songs are just average snapshots of the time (on the earliest sides) when rhythm & blues was on the cusp of changing into rock & roll, or early rock & roll with hints of soul music (on the later cuts). You could imagine fellow King artist James Brown singing some of these tunes in his earliest years, albeit with greater distinction (as Brown indeed did with Tex’s 1959 single “Baby You’re Right”). It’s also undeniable that Tex simply had yet to establish his own identity, as some of the tracks are quite imitative of Little Richard, Sam Cooke, and the Coasters (even to the point of attempting an “answer” record to the Coasters’ hit “Charlie Brown” on “Charlie Brown Got Expelled”). A lot of labels and artists, of course, were trying to imitate hit formulas in the early days of rock & roll. But in Tex’s case this can’t be solely attributed to pushes he might have gotten in that direction from King or Ace, as much of the material was penned by Joe himself (including the “Fever” soundalike “Pneumonia,” though Tex claimed he actually wrote “Fever” itself). In all, this collection is primarily recommended to serious Tex fans who are interested in hearing his rarest and deepest roots as a recording artist, as on its own terms it’s merely competent mid- to late-’50s R&B and rock & roll. Note that three of these tracks are 1955-1957 King recordings with 1965 female backing vocal overdubs, though those overdubs actually fit in pretty well. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

A Way to Your Heart

A Way to Your Heart

$10.38

Happiness Factor frontman Salim Nourallah gives the gentler side of his musical personality a hearing on this five-song EP, which cuts back on the bite of that band’s material for a warmer and more subtle approach, which recalls his early stuff with the Nourallah Brothers. While the title cut offers a nice bit of snap, most of A Way to Your Heart moves away from the rock-influenced style of the Happiness Factor for a lighter sound that suggests Todd Rundgren or George Harrison’s more pop-friendly moments. Nourallah has also left his sarcasm at home for these sessions, which boast lyrics that take a more optimistic and open-hearted perspective on love, especially on “Overwhelmed” and “Try to Get Along,” though the ghostly (and untitled) bonus track takes his gentler perspective down a different and slightly darker path. Lovely stuff, though Nourallah is advised not to toss away his amp stacks just yet. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

On his only album for Chess’ Cadet imprint, B-3 organist Reuben Wilson pulled the second of his now classic career change-ups. His first was on 1971′s Set Us Free, his final album for Blue Note. On that date Wilson and producer George Butler brought in a female backing chorus, a large soul band, and arranger Wade Marcus for a driving set of psychedelic soul, hard funk, and rockist B-3 workouts. Wilson moved to Groove Merchant for a couple of years where he released two solid albums with producer Sonny Lester before coming to Cadet in 1975 for this ill-fated date. Chess was in dire financial straits by this time and was soon to close its doors; the album became a cutout almost immediately. It languished in the bins and in record stores and distribution warehouse basements until sample crazy beatheads and British DJs picked up on it in the late 1980s.Wilson called his backing group “the Cost of Living,” even though this unit was comprised of studio players including trumpeter Jon Faddis, saxophonists Pee Wee Ellis, Seldon Powell, and Houston Person, drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, trombonist Garnett Brown, bassists Wilbur Bascomb and Gordon Edwards, conguero Norman Pride, and Richard Tee on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano. The session was orchestrated and conducted by Brad Baker (of B. Baker Chocolate Company) with string arrangements by Marcus once more. The whole mess was produced by Esmond Edwards. There are vocals on this date too: Sammy Turner and Kenny Williams handle lead vocals on three cuts, and a mixed gender chorus helps out virtually everywhere. Clocking In at just under 35 minutes, this set features one funky masterpiece after another. The enormous horn and wah-wah guitar driven original “What the People Gon’ Say,” has a call and response chorus worthy of the Ohio Players and breaks worthy of the J.B.’s. Turner’s vocals are fat and meaty enough to lay down some expressive, swaggering, streetwise observations on modern life, justice, and commerce — remember this set was recorded during the final days of the Gerald Ford administration and was a direct slap at Watergate. This is followed by “In the Booth, In the Back, In the Corner, In the Dark,” a tender, big-arrangement soul tune that walks the line between strutting uptown- and Curtom-styled soul. Edwards wrote “Back Rub,” where the only voices are a breathy male sexual exhale and the backing chorus. This is pure funky organ and synth madness, as the dialogue between Wilson, Tee and Marcus’ strings all vie for dominance in the mix. Williams lends his fine voice to lead the chorus in a spunky reading of Barbara Acklin’s “Stoned Out of My Mind,” with its choppy wah-wah guitars and Wilson’s melodic line on the Hammond, as it darts in and out of the punchy horn charts. This is the place where funk begins to blur into killer early disco. The best is saved for last, however, as the title track which closes the set is just a monster funk jam. Soaring flute, punchy chanted vocals, breakbeat

Then her sister Caludia's ex-husband starts stealing their kids' Ritalin for the high (and wouldn't you replace that stash of pills with The Pill, to teach him a lesson? His — ahem — unexpected chest development was an unforeseen but howlingly funny bonus. Hey, they weren't even A-cups.) And her relentlessly upwardly mobile sister Leah has dropped her clone businessman boyfriend and has taken up with a rock musician. And now Jake, the best friend of Emily and her former husband, seems to be spending a lot of time at her house. Which she likes way too much. So much that it's kind of scary, not to mention confusing. So what's a girl to do, but get together with her sisters for the monthly color-the-roots and gossip-and-advice session, to make the world seem sane again? And if that's too much to expect, at least you know you have good buddies in life's asylum!

“It’s not you, it’s me.” “We’ve grown apart.” “I think we should start seeing other people.” Whether it’s because of trust issues a bad fight, bad sex, or you can’t put your finger on where it went wrong, breaking up is never easy. In fact, it has the power to tear down your world in an instant. It may leave you sad, lost, confused, angry, or just plain lonely. Questions may torment your thoughts and get in the way of your ability to focus or socialize. You may even feel like you cannot function without your other half, the one you were so comfortable and familiar with. You begin the endless list of questions: “What am I supposed to do with myself? Why am I not good enough? Was I too overbearing? Did I not give up enough?” It’s overwhelming and exhausting, and the only way to recover is to find the help to rebuild your strength and move on. Your friends tell you that time heals all wounds, but you wonder what happens if it doesn’t. Some say it takes half the time you dated to get over your ex, but that’s usually far from the truth. How to Heal After Heartbreak helps mend your heart and put your life back on track. You will learn the fundamentals of relationships and why yours did not work out. You will get to know what to expect from heartbreak – betrayal, competition, self-attack, and denial – and how to best handle it. You may be one step away from slashing your ex’s tires or hacking into his or her Facebook account, but this book will work you through those emotions and tell you how to avoid tantrums, threats, violence, and acts of revenge. Instead, you will learn to walk with grace as you choose the high road to emotional freedom. Your feelings may instead be overly sentimental, where you’re still sleeping with his t-shirt or listening to her voicemails on repeat, fighting the temptation to beg your ex to come back. Fortunately, you can
